Veer Kunwar Singh is known as the great hero of the first freedom struggle of India, who at the age of 80 had the ability to fight and win. He is also known as Babu Kunwar Singh, an anti-injustice and lover of freedom who was a skilled army hero.

Veer Kunwar Singh was born on the 13th of  November 1777 in Jagdishpur village in Bhojpur district, Bihar. Veer Kunwar Singh’s full name was Babu Veer Kunwar Singh. His father’s name was Babu Sahabzada Singh and his mother’s name was Pancharatna Kunwar.

Veer Kunwar Singh’s father was among the descendants of the famous ruler Bhoj. He had 3 siblings. His younger brothers were Dayalu Singh, Amar Singh, and Rajapati Singh.

Veer Kunwar Singh Career

In 1857, Veer Kunwar Singh led the Indian Revolt of Bihar. Kunwar was about eighty and in failing health when he was called to take up arms. Veer Kunwar was accompanied by his brother, Babu Amar Singh, and his commander-in-chief, Hare Krishna. Kunwar fought a good fight for almost a year and harassed the British Army and remained invincible until the end.

Veer Kunwar was an expert in the art of guerilla warfare. His strategy and technique surprised the British. On the 27th of April 1857, Ara Nagar was captured by Babu Veer Kunwar along with Danapur soldiers, Bhojpuri jawans, and other companions. On the 23rd of April 1858, the people of Jagdishpur placed him on the throne and proclaimed him the king.

The British historian Holmes wrote of him, “That old Rajput fought against the British power with amazing valor and pride.” In the year 1858, on 22nd and 23rd April, when wounded, he fought valiantly against the British army and the help of his army, drove the British army, landed the Union Jack from Jagdishpur Fort, and hoisted his flag.

Veer Kunwar Singh died on 26 April 1858 (aged 80) in Jagdishpur, Bhojpur, Bihar.

Veer Kunwar Singh Awards and Honors

The Republic of India issued a commemorative postage stamp on the 23rd of April 1966, to honor his contribution to the independence movement of India. The Government of Bihar established the Veer Babu Kunwar Singh University, in Arrah 1992. Veer Kunwar Singh Setu, also known as Arrah-Chhapra Bridge, was inaugurated to connect North and South Bihar In 2017. In 2018, to commemorate the 160th anniversary of Veer Kunwar Singh’s death, the Bihar government moved a statue of him to Harding Park. The park was also officially designed as “Veer Kunwar Singh Azadi Park”.
