Facebook-parent Meta COO Sheryl Sandberg has stepped down, the company confirmed Wednesday. He did not disclose the reasons for leaving the company. In a Facebook post, Sheryl  Sandberg said she plans to focus on her philanthropic work.

“Since those early days the debate on social media has changed beyond recognition. To say it hasn’t always been easy is an understatement. But it must be hard. The products we make have a huge impact, so we have It’s a responsibility to build them in a way that protects privacy and keeps people safe,” Sandberg wrote.

Sandberg was born in 1969 in Washington, DC to a Jewish family, the daughter of Adele (née Einhorn) and Joel Sandberg, and the eldest of three children. His father is an ophthalmologist, and his mother was a French language college teacher.

When she was two years old, her family moved to North Miami Beach, Florida. She attended North Miami Beach High School, from where she graduated in 1987 and ranked ninth in her class. She was the sophomore class president, became a member of the National Honor Society, and was on the senior class executive board. Sandberg taught aerobics while in high school in the 1980s.

She also met Professor Lawrence Summers, who became her mentor and thesis advisor. Summers recruited him as their research assistant at the World Bank, where he worked for nearly a year on health projects tackling leprosy, AIDS and blindness in India.
